[HOME John] Douglas: A Tragedy
for A Millar 1757
as it acted at the Theatre-Royal in Covent-Garden, modern paper wrappers, lacking half-title, feintly spotted, a nice copy. as having been written by the minister of Athelstaneford, publication of this popular drama gave great offence to many in Scotland; but prominent among friends who rallied to his defence were Dr Hugh Blair and Dr Alexander Carlyle - the latter in an ironical brochure entitled “An argument to prove that the tragedy of Douglas ought to be publickly burned by the common hangman”. Edinburgh and London editions were published during the last fortnight of March 1757, newspaper announcements indicating that the latter was issued ten days before the former; first performed in Edinburgh December 1756 and in London 14 March 1757; according to A E Case the Edinburgh edition is ‘clearly the basic text’, ommissions in the London edition ‘evidently representing cuts made in a slightly abbreviated acting version’. The London edition also varies from the Edinburgh edition in dividing Acts II and III into three scenes each; first edition; 71 pages including epilogue Rothschild 1153
