two volumes, original cloth, spines bumped, minor marks to covers, red and black titlepages, bright, small pieces missing from pastedowns, very good. a tragic tale about a gallant old squire and his adulterous wife; the author’s only work; the Bentley file copy is described as half-cloth over marbled celluloid (the first use of celluloid in binding) and this copy has evidence of an earlier cloth beneath the binding, being identical to Wolff’s copy (Wolff speculates that the celluloid binding was a trial binding); first edition; 324 and 297 pages Wolff 6940
